This book group will focus on books with a simple, old-fashioned flavor and endearing, intriguing, and very often eccentric characters. They can be charming, touching, poignant, humorous, and spiritually uplifting.
The stories generally contain little graphic violence or sex and provide a pleasurable reading experience. The Kezar Library, located at the corner of Church and Main, is open Tuesday 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Wednesday 9:30 am - 5:30 pm, Thursday 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 9:30 am - 5:30 pm.
Friday, June 20th, 9:30 am: Bad Ground by W. Dale Cramer
Deep in underground darkness, miners sometimes discover beautiful crystals in "bad ground." This lovely symbolism permeates Cramer's second full-length novel. The day before his mother's funeral, newly orphaned 17-year-old Jeremy Prine is given a letter in which she tells him, "When the time is right I want you to go find your Uncle Aiden....
You have something I couldn't give him, and he has something I couldn't give you." He hitchhikes to where Aiden, aka Snake, works a hard-rock tunnel south of Atlanta, and Jeremy manages to wangle a job. Cramer invites the reader into the life of the rock tunnel workers-hard-bitten, simple men with simple desires-as Jeremy wrestles with change, loss and becoming a man. Rather than relying on the tired plots and settings often used in Christian novels, Cramer offers an unusual underground world that both repels and attracts the reader. - Publisher's Weekly

At the Romeo District Library, Graubner Library
"Like metamorphosis . once you start changing, you've already changed."
Kathe Koja, Kissing the Bee
Four County Community Foundation presents an afternoon with starred reviewed novelist Kathe Koja at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 21st, to kick off the Teen Summer Reading Program, Metamorphosis @ Your Library.
Publishers Weekly writes that Koja captures "each line of dialogue, each interaction illuminating struggles that readers face as well," in Kissing the Bee. Koja explains that while teenagers are "in the midst of the metamorphosis of adolescence, where so many of the changes are beyond one's control, there are still some things that can be consciously shaped for the better . what a maelstrom those years can be, how frustrating and how scary, along with the upthrusts of energy and joy."
A book signing will follow this incredible opportunity to get to know the author of six acclaimed young adult novels that explore a variety of changes teens face today through this interactive program. Books will be available for purchase through The Books Connection of Shelby in Shelby Township. Please call (586) 752-0603, option 4 for more information.

We hope to inspire optimism in spite of these tough economic times while creating
a sense of renewed hope and pride for
our Great Lake State.
Gabriel's Garden Magazine launched in Summer 2008 with its "Lavender In Bloom" edition. This issue highlights the Sixth Annual Michigan Lavender Festival hosted by Gabriel's Garden in July. Perhaps one of the most
anticipated sections for our readers has been "The Lavender Gourmet", which offers recipes for desserts and savory dishes infused with this delightful herb. Other features include "Michigan Road Trip", "Inspiring Entrepreneurs", and "Made In Michigan", highlighting some of the states most influential places, people and products.
This publication has been a joy to put together, and we look forward to sharing it with you. We hope that you will mark your calendars for our Magazine Launch Party and stop by to celebrate with us. We have a Complimentary Issue reserved just for you!
